After Images: An Introduction to the Concept of Wabi-Sabi |
A
2-day workshop that will explore how to find and make beautiful
imagery out of things that are old, used, or ephemeral.
It is based on the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi (the beauty
of rust). The purpose of the workshop will be to develop
an understanding of the Wabi-sabi concept and how it has
been expressed in various media, artist’s work and
everyday life.
We will use found objects and found imagery to create 2
small projects.
We will make a cloth covered folded box and an accordion
fold journal/album that can be used to hold photos, poems,
journal entries and found objects that will become the start
of your own collection of After Images. We will use disposable
cameras and various surface design techniques to capture
images. We will learn to use fabric and paper together,
and some basic sashiko stitches to enhance our projects.
We will do a few exercises to develop our own interpretations.
NO sewing machine required.
Description is for a 2-day workshop. This workshop can be
modified for a 3-5 day class.
